Club History
The Gold Coast Magic Circle was started in the early 2000’s when John Lawson (The Great Lawsoni) gathered a bunch of enthusiastic magicians around him for some fun.
What follows are some meeting notes from back then.

Change… The theme of our July meeting.
View this email in your browser
We are endeavouring to take the club on a journey with the help of the people who make our club….YOU!
CHANGE! The theme at our July meeting. We are changing the way we do things, so it’s a fresh new approach.
The success of the clubs future is dependable on like-minded people that can keep the magic alive & burning in our club.
Are you one of those like-minded people?
** Our website, Facebook & Instagram pages
are now updated & in full swing so please check them out regularly to keep posted on all things Magical.
Our meeting started off with an awesome slide show presentation that you can view here……….
** Our meeting this month was one full of great performances, lots of fun & laughter & loads of participation. Our three educating presenters gave us so much to think about & to take home & learn. It was a pleasure watching them & all who presented.
It was the most performances we have had in a long while.
Performances this month were out of sight…Liquid was the theme.
————————————————————
Dan said there was a leak in the ceiling so he placed a silver tin on the stage to catch the water. Every so often he had to empty it as it filled up. But amazingly none of us could see the leak…
Where was that water coming from???
Michael Pinter showed us an old trick that was performed in the vaudeville days…. He showed an empty box & told us he was going to pour liquid into this box and it would remain clean & dry. He told us the magician in the old days would place a cup in the box (which he did). But he said he wasn’t going to do that & he took the cup out, poured the liquid in & then said he would use a super soaker cup to dry it up. He then put his cup into the box & moved it around & sure enough it soaked up all of the liquid he had poured in & showed us a full cup of liquid & a perfectly clean & dry box.
Narayan performed a teleporting card trick. Darin helped him by signing a card with a smiley face, Narayan then folded it up & had Darin clench it in his teeth. Narayan then signed a card himself & clenched it in his teeth. He told Darin this is where it gets romantic (if he was a girl) with us staring at each other. After a few moments, he took his card out of his teeth & it was the card Darin had put a smiley face on & magically, the card Darin had was the one Narayan had signed.
It blew us away, so cool!
Dan asked if he could empty his silver container again, but obviously it had no water as none of us saw it dripping… but low & behold it was full again!
Darin taught us how to tie a knot without letting go of the rope. Arthur was his volunteer & had to follow Darin’s exact moves, he did exactly as Darin did & amazingly got it first time. (Darin had paid him to get it wrong but he got it right). Then Darin’s sister Julie helped & proceeded to follow Darin & after two attempts still failed. So Darin helped & blew on the rope & passed the magic knot to Julie’s rope. I think he imported his rope from Eur rope!
Jamie amazed us with his balls, sponge balls…. It went from here to there, one turned into three then none. He kept making it disappear through the table. Someone’s maths was wrong as we always counted three but two was the lucky number. Such awesome sleight of hand!
Silloo had a magic blackboard, she wrote the word rope on one side then turned it around & wrote magic on the other side. She then proceeded to click her fingers & the side with the word rope turned into a magic rope imprinted into the board which she pulled out & showed everyone. Simply ropable! Silloo also performed a four joker card trick.
Darin had a full glass of water & asked if we would like to see him turn it up side down without spilling a drop…… He then proceeded to pick the glass up, move it to the side & put it down, up, side, down. He had done it precisely as he said! To add to the finale he actually did turn it upside down & spin it around without spilling a drop.
Holy moly…. Dan emptied his water container yet again, blowed if I could see a leak…..
Drew showed us his cool card case that protects his cards & he had Narayan examine the card case. Drew then took out a card & gave it to Silloo to show everyone. He said he wasn’t just going to make Silloo’s card disappear but the whole deck. By stroking the whole deck with the one card, when he placed the single card back into the box the whole pack had disappeared except the one card Silloo had picked.
Drew has many pocket magic tricks for sale that he will bring along to the next meeting.
The first of our educating performers, Drew took to the stage to show us “Water Suspension”. He had a bucket of water & a glass. Drew filled his glass three quarters full then placed his hand over the glass to produce a seal & then turned the glass upside down, a little water leaked out & when he removed his hand the water stayed put. It’s upside down , how is the water not falling out????? Wow, Magic water suspension! Drew gave us a few variations & also the do’s & don’ts regarding water suspension.
Thanks Drew, awesome magic.
Our second Educating performer Dan, showed us a magic red potion; he poured it into a glass & asked us if was half full or half empty. He then turned it upside down & the magic potion stayed in the glass. He then produced a red silk out of the red liquid that he then made disappear into his hand (no thumb tip in sight) & produced a red strawberry, which he ate! It really was a magic potion.
Our third educating performer, John, our lifelong member performed Midnight Nip or as it is also called In the News. John said he is a closet drinker & said his wife doesn’t like him drinking.
He had a drink in his hand & he heard his wife coming up the stairs, he had nowhere to hide it except in his newspaper so he folded it up & poured the wine into the paper hoping it wouldn’t leak.
Amazingly it didn’t.
He unfolded the paper & opened the pages & after his wife left he poured the wine back into his glass.
Arthur showed us an extension to Drew’s Water Suspension trick. He had Michael as his helper & they had two empty beer bottles that he had Michael fill with water. He said he had trouble emptying the beer out & not sure where it disappeared to but something tasted cold! Arthur asked Michael to follow exactly what he did. He asked the audience what would happen if he turned the bottle on the side or upside down & obviously we all said it would fall out. He put his hand over the lip & said he would produce a seal. When he removed his hand the water stayed in the bottle even though it was upside down. He had Michael repeated the exact same steps, over the bucket, just in case…. And of course Michael’s water poured out. Arthur still holding his bottle upside down proceeded to push pencils up into the bottle. Michael still did not have the magic that Arthur had as he couldn’t get he water to seal.
Arthur you’re a legend!
After all of our fantastic performances from our members, the educating performers revealed how they achieved the magic they had presented & gave us tips & advice on how to get the best out of these awesome tricks they had performed for us.
Michael Pinter was the lucky raffle winner. Thank you to all those who supported our club & bought tickets, maybe you will be lucky next time.

Meeting performance:
- Arthur Coghlan – was our first performer with an amazing trick. Joanne Pada was the volunteer and she was in for a treat. Arthur uses a cutting device. Where he explains that once upon a time if people were convicted of a crime they had their hand cut off. And Arthur’s cutting machine was very clever as it could tell whether the person was innocent or had committed the crime. If innocent then the cutter wouldn’t cut the hand. He demonstrated his cutting machine by first using a carrot explaining that the carrot is innocent so shouldn’t be cut. But oh no the carrot was cut. Arthur placed Joanne’s hand inside the cutting machine and making sure that she couldn’t remove her hand, Joanne covered her eyes and then chop …. Luckily for Joanne the machine knew that she was innocent.
- Jeff Bennett – performs a trick using rubber bands with Rachel Riggall as his volunteer. Rachel checks the rubber bands ensuring that they are all good and are proper rubber bands. Jeff passes rubber bands through each other and then places them on Rachel’s hands completing the same trick where the rubber bands seem to pass through each other.
- Drew Glebow – performs a card trick with the visitor Narayana Johnson as his volunteer. Drew asks Narayana to choose a card and sign the card. Drew then places the card back with the rest of the cards and places the entire deck of cards back inside their card packet box. He then uses a lighter, placing the flame just under the box explaining that this type of heat which is called radiant heat will be able to find Narayana’s card. Drew opens the box of cards and the only card that has been heat scorched is the card that Narayana had signed.
- John Pada – performed a trick using rubber bands. He breaks the rubber band and then he restores it. He performs this trick again but slowly so that the audience can hear the break and the rubber band re-joining. Now using 2 rubber bands, John places a ring on a rubber band. John stretches out the rubber bands and the audience can see 4 lines or both sides of the rubber bands outstretched. He is able to move the ring up and down the rubber bands. Very clever.
- Narayana Johnson – performs a card trick. Where he displays cards face up and then he waves his hand and the cards end up being face down. He also shows that when he is holding 4 cards that he can manipulate the cards so that 2 are face up and the other 2 are face down. Well done to our visitor for performing on his first night and what a great trick!!!
End of the magic performances.
After the magic performances, members came together to show magic tricks, ask questions and socialise with each other. Another amazing and magical night enjoyed by all that attended.
Final words:
This is what the magic club is all about…..presentation, learning new magic tricks and having fun. I encourage all members to come along each month as lots of magic tricks are being presented and members will be walking away having learnt at least one new trick.

John Lawson introduced our lecturer ‘Jay Scott Berry’
This is the third time that Jay has provided our magical club with a lecture. His performance was nothing short of being fun and interesting and of course magical. Jay captivated the audience, with his humour, finesse and the smooth transitioning of presenting his tricks. The expressions and quizzical oohs and arhs flowed throughout the audience as they watched in awe of this international performer. We were very lucky to have him lecture and then provide the secrets to his tricks. I would like to praise his son, Tristan who I might add is only 5years old, sat so very quietly throughout Jay’s presentation. Tristan was very well behaved.

Ice Breaker:
The members were given the task of telling two truths and one lie. One of the statements had to be magic related. Just a fun and informal way of the members getting to know each other and learning more about each other. There were some interesting facts and some funny lies told.
Member News:
Over the holidays Rachel Riggall participated in a modelling course and has had two photo shoots. From one of the photo shoots, 4 gorgeous modelling photos have been chosen and are on the Tamblyn’s Model Agency website for the next 12 months. As Rachel completed year 12 last year, Rachel has started her full time dance and musical theatre course at Dynamite Studios Australia in Upper Coomera. Well Done to Rachel, she is going places!!!
Bert Lyster shared with the club his recent travels to La Vegas. He was welcomed with a lunch at a restaurant with Lance Burton, Norm Nielson and Lupe, Bill Smith the illusion maker, Micheal Gordou, Pam Thompson, Johnny was away performing, Fieding West, and a few others. Bert saw the performances of Penn and Teller, Chris Angel, Mac King, Mat Franco, Mike Hammer, and David Copperfield. He spoke of the funniest show being Mike Hammer and the best was David Copperfield. Bert met all of the performers after the show. There was also a tribute to Frank Sinatra by some of the Vegas performers including Rich Little. It was Frank Sinatra’s 100th birthday if he was still alive. He then had the privilege of performing with Lance Burton and about 4 other performers at 4 disadvantaged schools around Las Vegas. After that Lance drove him back to his house (more like a castle) and Bert had a private screening of his film he produced with others “Billy Topit”. Bert exclaimed that this was marvellous. Bert was also entertained with closeup and a small performance at a Christmas party of a Hotel that his daughter’s partner Chris is the manager of. Bert then spent a few hours at the home of Norn Nielson and Lupe as well as an afternoon with Bill Smith the illusion maker. Bert went on to say that Johnny and Pam Thompson invited him to have dinner at their place one of the nights. Bert finished with by saying “It was great, one of the greatest holiday’s I have had!” After which Bert showed us some fantastic photos. Thank you Bert how lucky are you to have spent time with these magical people.
Alan Blair made some card board boxes, which are the perfect size for cards and you can write on these boxes. He is selling them. They are good quality and great for a number of different tricks. He sold a few on the night. I believe he has more. If anyone wants these little white boxes. Please email Mish on tobi77@bigpond.com or speak with Alan at our next club meeting on March the 14th.

Magic Awards:
Best dressed costume – won by Michael Pinter and Austin Albert.
Theme for April:
Comedy/eggs.
As it will be just after Easter.
Meeting performance:
- John Pada– was our first performer of the night and what a performance. He performed a rope trick to music, as John was inspired by Daz Buckley. (Daz Bukley gave us a rope workshop, at the beginning he performed a rope trick to music).
- Dave Lord– performed a card trick using business cards. Where one is different The cards say “this card” and the odd card says “that card” volunteer chooses a card and Dave says you could have picked this card or this card but you picked that card and reveals the card saying “that card”. He repeats the trick and on the third performance the cards are opposite and they all say “that card”.
- Dan Brand– performed a card trick, using mental magic. He asked his volunteer (Drew) to think of a pet and then the name of a pet. Drew says a bird named Cheeky. Dan was incorrect at guessing the pet and the name. Then Dan asks for another volunteer (Bert) and asks him to think of his favourite food and then Dan guessed this and he was incorrect again, as Bert’s favourite food is pavlova. Dan then asks the audience to think of a card, while another volunteer (Tristan) shuffled the cards. Dan then asked Tristan to stop and Tristan chooses a card. Then Dan asks Kornelia to choose a card and Dan guesses what the card is and he is correct. Dan asks Cyrus to choose a card and again Dan guesses correctly. Silloo is the next volunteer and she is given 3 pieces of paper and on the papers are a bird named cheeky and a pavlova. And then Dan guesses Tristan’s card correctly. Dan brings all answers together at the end.
- Michael Pinter – performed a card trick. Cole was the volunteer. Michael asks Cole to place the cards into 4 piles. Michael asks Cole to pick up a pile and place 3 cards on to each pile. And repeat for the next 3 pile of cards. Michael asks Cole to turn over the top card of all 4 piles, revealing that they are all aces. Michael then places all of the cards face down. He asks Cole to choose 2 cards, Michael then chooses a card and it’s not the aces, but Cole’s cards are.
- Silloo Mahernosh– performed a card trick, using a deck of cards, Silloo places the ace of spades face up in the pack and all of the other cards are facing the other way around. Then Silloo was able to produce all of the aces facing up, mixed through the deck of cards.
- Danny Beveridge– performed a trick using Joanne’s ring, Joanne was the volunteer. Danny ask Joanne how long has she been married, 10 years was her reply. Meanwhile Danny places the ring on the rope and ties a knot, symbolising John and Joanne tying the knot 10 years ago. Danny places the rope and the ring in Joanne’s hand and the ring comes off into her hands.
- Alex Leinonen– performed a card trick with music. He asks for volunteers (Tristan, Cyrus and Chadd). Alex gives a pike of cards to each volunteer. He asks each volunteer to shuffle their cards and then they hand them back to Alex. Alex chooses cards and then changes them into Aces. He uses a board to place the cards on.
- Alan Blair – performed a trick with ‘post it notes’ and pens. Having Kornelia as his volunteer, asking her to hand out the ‘post it notes’ and pens to different people in the audience. Alan asked each person to write down a secret. Then Kornelia using a large glass collects all of the ‘post it notes’ and pens. Alan asks Silloo to choose a ‘post it note’ and to give it to Kornelia of whom Alan asks Kornelia to draw what’s on the ‘post it note.’ Alan doesn’t see what is on the ‘post it note’, but he also draws a picture as well. Kornelia then reads out the ‘post it note’ and shows her drawing “ I once totally ignored a traffic light” Kornelia had drawn a traffic light and a road. Alan shows hiss drawing to the audience, he had drawn a traffic light.
End of the magic performances.
After the magic performances, members came together to show magic tricks, ask questions and socialise with each other. Another amazing and magical night enjoyed by all that attended.

November Birthdays:
Happy Birthday to Jeff Bennett and Bert Lyster.
Meeting commenced: 6:51pm
Ice Breaker:
The members and guests were presented with a toilet roll and asked to take as many sheets of toilet paper that they felt that they wanted. Little did they know what each sheet of toilet paper meant. Each person had a turn at standing up and telling everyone something about themselves. With each sheet of paper, something new was told. So the more sheets of paper that you had, the more you had to tell. It was a lot of fun and quite interesting listening to everyone. A great way for everyone to learn something new and get to know each other better.

Rachel is the international winner, this is the top prize, and you cannot get any higher than this. Both Rachel and her Mother Mish are very excited and happy. In October Arthur performed a trick using a rope and a brass ring, which was tied onto the rope and then he was able to remove the ring which was hidden under a scarf and the rope was being held by someone else. In December Arthur will reveal the secrets to this trick, but until then he has suggested spending the coming weeks working out how this trick is performed and then next month (December), members can perform or explain how they think the trick is done and then Arthur will explain and teach how to perform this trick. This was a trick worth seeing and learning, so another reason to come along in December to learn how the secret and presentation of this trick – thank you Arthur!!!

Meeting performance:
The children’s workshop presented by Chadd Small was very successful and a lot of fun. Members were put into groups to work on presenting a trick. The groups worked on the patter, presentation, teamwork, concepts and being creative, to present their version of a child’s magic trick. The workshop was about taking the important aspects of presenting magic to children like storytelling, age specific magic, and the ability to engage the audience with comedy, fun and simplicity.
Groups that performed on the night:
With an interesting patter, using the effects of 2 hollow tubes, with a soft drink standing upright in each were presented. A volunteer was asked to hold one of the tubes and the presenter held the other tube. The volunteer followed the instructions of turning the tube the same number of times as the presenter, only to reveal that the bottle of soft drink was upside down and the presenters drink bottle remained the correct way up. This was presented a few times, with the same result.
The next performance using a magic box and a lovely story of a birthday gift, 2 people presented the hidden secrets of this magical box. The box was shown as being empty and then time and time again it was revealed that this magical box contained a number of things, from silks to fruit and vegetables.
With the use of a rectangled shaped cylinder, a red sponge ball was placed inside, though the performer was hoping for a large dice to appear, instead a rubiks cube was presented. Thankfully the trick ended with a large dice being revealed.
Then we were tempted with pizza, appearing and disappearing inside a box. Only to discover that there was pizza to be found magically appearing inside a tree.
The last performance wanted to get some laundry done. The presenter wanted to wash his socks. With a great story, two presenters entertained the audience with socks that went into a washing machine, and then more came out, more socks were added only to end up with the colours being mixed. (now I know where all of the missing socks go).
This was a great workshop for members to work with each other, help each other and get to know each other.
End of the magic performances.
After the magic performances, members came together to show magic tricks, ask questions and socialise with each other. Another amazing and magical night enjoyed by all that attended.
Final words:
This is what the magic club is all about…..presentation, learning new magic tricks and having fun. I encourage all members to come along each month as lots of magic tricks are being presented and members will be walking having learnt at least one new trick.

The Variety Concert on Saturday the 10th October was very entertaining. There were lots of laughs, and plenty of claps and cheers. The music, jokes and magic was well worth watching. Arthur thanks Chadd for his assistance. Chadd responded with “That it was an absolute pleasure to work with Helen and Arthur.”
It was noted that the torn and restored trick that it all comes down to the Presentation. This is a reminder and a positive message that you don’t need big illusions, you just need to have good presentation.
Rachel Riggall won a modelling competition. She was the major winner in the Country girl Australia modelling competition for her region. Her prizes included being crowned, a huge bunch of flowers, clothes, jewellery and make up. Rachel has made it through to the Nationals which are being held at Jupiters Casino, next year in July. The website is being updated, as the old website was out of date. So keep checking the website as updates and changes are taking place. The home page has changed and there are extra tabs with relevant information. One of the new tabs that has been set up, is for magicians, entertainers and performers to advertise on our website. Check out the tab called “Book a Magician”. You don’t have to be a magician, you could be a circus performer. This is not just for magicians.
If there are any questions regarding advertising please send through an email with relevant information regarding who you are and what you do to Chadd or Mish. Check the website for our current email addresses.
We also have updated the magic circle Facebook. The website and Facebook are linked. Facebook provides a massive avenue within social media to attract many interested people. If we all shared the Gold Coast Magic Circle on Facebook and our friends did the same, imagine the large number of followers we would have as a club. Credit goes to Chadd, as he has spent many hours, days, a lot of his time on updating and adding content to the magic circle Facebook. We need members to like and share the magic circle Facebook. The main way to find the club is through Facebook, so let’s all like, tag, comment and share. It is the fastest way to spread the news and lets people learn about the club.

It has been suggested to change the logo, due to the upgrades of our website.
Competiton:
Do you want free membership for one year, then this is a competition for you. Design a new logo for our magical club. The logo needs to be square or round and be able to be printed on to a shirt. Committee members will choose the best three and these 3 logos will be put back to the members to vote on which logo that they would like to be used for our club. So get your creative caps on, dabble in photoshot. Please submit it by the next monthly meeting. Colour and black and white. The winning logo will be used on the website and we will transition to the new logo over time. To win a year’s membership for our magical club, design the winning logo.
The logo needs to use bold text, be simple, no clip art images, and it must represent a broad image of magic. Come up with concepts and ideas. What do you think of when you think of magic? What do you see as an image that represents magic. The logo must say the Gold Coast Magic Circle Inc. and have the website address on it. Good Luck!!!
Please note the winning logo then becomes the property of the Gold Coast Magic Circle Incorporated. If for any reason the member doesn’t renew their membership the following year, the member cannot ask for their logo to be removed from our website, Facebook and all club related items.
Meeting performance:
Each monthly meeting Arthur has made a very generous offer to teach a trick each month. So this is an excellent reason to come along each month to learn new tricks.
- Last month, Arthur Coghlan – performed a trick called ‘cards on a clock stand’. At the start all of the cards are from a blue pack, but at the end one card has a red back. This month, Arthur performed the same trick and then he revealed the secret to how this trick works.
- Arthur then performed another trick using a string and a washer. Where he covers the washer and ties the washer onto the string, and it appears as if you cannot remove the washer. Having David Evans as his assistant, David wasn’t able to undo the knot and remove the washer. But as quickly as ever, Arthur removes the washer from the string.
Arthur has suggested, everyone spend the coming weeks thinking of how this trick was executed and then next month (December), members can perform or explain their version of how they think the trick was done. Arthur will then reveal the method and show step by step how to perform this trick. This was a trick worth seeing and learning, so another reason to come along in December to learn the secret and presentation – thank you Arthur!!!
- Daz Buckley who is a professional magician, has been practicing and performing magic since the age of 12, he was on television at 16. He also sings and uses music in his magic performances. Daz has been a member of our club for 6 years. When Daz was 12 years old, he was inspired by Arthur, when he first saw him at The Magic Castle. He also did a comedy act with Austin Albert for 2 years. At the October meeting, Daz performed two amazing rope tricks the “Professor’s Nightmare” and “cut and restored” to music. He then went through how to perform the rope tricks. Daz went through step by step, with guided hand positions and clear explanations. Using the tables set up with scissors and rope. Members gathered around to learn the secrets to the amazing presentation of the professor’s nightmare and the cut and restored rope tricks. Thank you very much Daz. Your rope workshop was enjoyed by all and I am sure everyone learnt something new.
